So, I have seen this happen a few times. A small server just starting out who's population is more or less made out of people who know each other. Currently if someone needs an item they ask around and it is given to them or traded. Any tips or advice (other than the obvious "get more people").

Littlechan

I think the best advice is...get more people, seriously =O

but maybe I'm just don't make sense...(I've just get up from my lovely sleep) I'll try to add more later XD

*Thank You very much for Azurene*

Lower droprates?

That would make everything even more expensive.

The problem really isn't things being expensive. People have all this zeny with nothing to spend it on. Even if you have something to sell, there is no point to sell it since you get zeny in return with... nothing to use it with. The majority of items are simply just given away.

if someone needs an item they ask around and it is given to them or traded.

Restrict/ Discourage lending or borrowing of items.
- If you get scammed, don't ask for help from GM if you lend someone your Megingjard. We shall not entertain them.
- Better still, make some of the items -cannot be drop, cannot be traded, cannot be vended, etc... (use your best judgment)

People have all this zeny with nothing to spend it on.

Make stuffs for them to spend it on. For example: To open Rachel Sanctuary Dungeon, players will need to contribute a total of X million zeny. (zeny sink)
Players are suckers for HATS - make some cool hats for sale or quests requiring zeny
Comodo Gambling - "The House Always Win" /gg
Dead Branch/ Bloody Branch room - with an NPC selling them at inflated prices. If the prices are too high and players rather farm them. Stop the server from dropping Dead Branch/Bloody Branches.
Sell "Plots of Land" - err.. I saw it one server, where donors buy plots of land (personal space) with NPCs at easy reach. A playground for the rich. Invite friends to chill or have DB parties.
Increase the prices of NPC items - suck out money from the economy
Warp are no longer free. you will need to pay. ANd the higher your level, the more expensive it gets.
No free reset skills/stats anymore. you will need to pay. ANd the higher your level, the more expensive it gets.
If you have something to say on Main, go buy a Megaphone - There is Freedom of Speech. But you still have to pay to speak. lol
TAX THOSE RICH BASTARDS!!!

How did they amass so much zeny anyways? Gold Room? Very high Drop rates?
If you have a Gold Room - terminate it.
If they have farming fields - which makes it ideal to get lots of loots and NPC them. Reduce the NPC value of the items. Change the drop rates. Add different monsters - aggro/opposite elements etc... to slow it down.
If you cannot answer with great certainty - how so many players get so rich so fast (in a short period of time) --> better start auditing the top 10 wealthiest players and your GMs. Any signs of exploitation of bugs? Any corruptions?

The majority of items are simply just given away.

Turn them into quest items. So,... u all have Megingjards. But do you have a Megingjard with slots. Here is the list of items you need X million zeny, 1000 of this JUNK, 2000 of that JUNK, etc... and there's also a risk that the Slot might fail. So, you might need to prepare more than just one set.

Well, I don't really know your server. It's hard to advice what to do. Everything listed above have pros/cons. Use your best judgment and try to balance it out. And when the economy shrinks to the desired state, time to adjust things back in moderation and slowly.

An example: iRO (not entirely similar problem but "too many zeny" in the economy).

1. Step one. Introduce rachel sanctuary - zeny sink. Donate to open the dungeon. Beret/Feather Beret were in season.

2. Step two. Introduce Thor (Kasa). Star Gladiator become the most popular class overnight. If you have a Star Gladiator, everyone wants to be your friend. People will be BUY BUY BUY white potions from NPC in millions and millions to leech their characters. One source estimated the introduction of Thor Patch sucked at least half a million of zeny from the economy every minute. The value of zeny is stronger. People feel poorer. Stop buying unnecessary items. Prices starting to drop drastically making it easier for new players (sort of)

3. Step three. Time to pump up the economy (recovery) - introduce Treasury Box (drops in castle) which do nothing more than just NPC for pure zeny. Nerf Star Gladiator to stop further sucking of zeny from the economy at staggering rate.

4. Introduce Nameless Island - new items, new equipments, new hats, new cards (don't remember- cards always comes later) .... stimulate the economy. People want to upgrade to get the "better gears" and keep up to the trend.

True, but it will solve the problem of items being handed out. Now, they will actually have to work for it.

Thanks for the advice bleu. Some of your ideas I think will help out I think.

As for rates, they were 3/3/3 but now they're up to 10's, so it's not as if there is a super high rate.
