I've tested it recently, I won't say what server, but I have done this and WPE isn't necessarily the proper tool.
There are others that are out, which I will not name, that do the job better than WPE. If you choose not to turn off your mail system, you do risk being exploited and your server ruined. If you choose not to, I don't care. I'm only putting this info out for you to know so you can prevent it from happening.

However, another reason to shut down the mailing system.
It was fixed in r13571, however, many servers are behind that revision.
Now, people will go about exploiting the code.
